Kereru Counting

Forest and Bird launched a nationwide Kereru count on the 19th February.  It runs until the 27th so we have been on the look out for kereru in our area.

 

 We see them quite often in our town.  They like to sit on the power lines and gorge themselves on the flowering and fruiting trees.  

One flew over our backyard a couple of days ago, we heard it flying before we actually saw it.  They fly quite low with a heavy beating of wings.  So we have recorded our siting.

If you see one ~ this is what you do.  Go to this website and log your siting ~ easy!  The information gathered will help in learning about the Kereru's distribution around New Zealand and what they are eating.

Sadie is always obliging when Vanya from Hope and Glory asks if she would like to model some dresses from the shop.   It helps when she's rewarded in beautiful wee gifts from the shop of course.

The sun teased us by hiding behind the clouds and then popping out during a costume change, but I did manage get some nice shots.

Pizza outside the Gingerbread House

Tonight was pizza night and we thought we had better make the most of the warm summer evening.  

So it was a picnic dinner outside the Gingerbread House.

Homemade pizza with Grandma's lemonade.

Homemade Pizza

Base

1 tablespoon of active yeast

half teaspoon sugar

1 cup tepid water

1 teaspoon salt

2 cups plain white flour

1 cup wholemeal flour

1 tablespoon oil

Put the yeast, sugar and tepid water into a bowl and leave aside until frothy.  In another bowl put in flour and salt.  Add the oil and yeast mixture into the flour.  Mix and kneed until smooth.  Put dough into a clean bowl covered with a tea towel and place in a warm spot until dough has doubled in size.  Punch down and kneed again.  I cut the dough in half and make two smaller pizzas.  Roll out and put onto a tray and top with your favourite flavours.  Ours is super basic ~ sauce, cheese and free range bacon.  Cook 220.C for 15 minutes.

Martinborough Fair

I adore the Martinborough Fair.

 I have very fond memories of getting up early with dad when I was a child and hanging around all day while he sold his wooden toys.  The fear of getting lost in the crowds, the buskers, eating watermelon and Maori bread.  Finding a treasure to take home.

 

 

Heart Felt will be there tomorrow, hope you can find me in the crowds.  I will be with Margot from Fantail Grove who will be selling local olive oil and hazelnuts, so look out for us. We will be in the Kitchener Street side of the the square.

Little pink field mouse

For Sadie's christmas present I got Shelley from Atticus Finch to make me a custom ordered cape.  

Sadie embraces the dramatics of dress-ups so I knew she would love it.

This gorgeous cape is a work of art and is made from all recycled fabrics, lined with a beautiful floral cotton and with little mouse ears.  It ties up with a gorgeous big silk bow and finished off with butterfly and dragonfly appliques.

Something to treasure for ever.

I'm not 100% happy with these photos, it was the wrong time of day, the sun was too high and bright and the shadows were all wrong,  

But Sadie had a lovely time being a little pink field mouse.

 

We are off to the beach for a long weekend, hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Shop update

I've been quietly working away in the evenings getting things ready to restock my Felt shop and also preparing for my first market for the year.  There are a few things for the cooler months ahead and I also have some felt garlands in new colours.

Fur pixie hat lined with cotton.  

The fur is from a vintage fur coat, so it will be super soft and warm.

 

and recycled wool pants made from the sleeves of a woollen jersey.  Elasticated waist with hand stitching and a little felt rabbit motif.  Super cute.

The New Rags Market will be at the Greytown Town Centre this Sunday 9am - 3pm.
