Oscar turns 2!

Our happy gorgeous boy turned two years old today.

A fairy helper laid a beautiful afternoon tea table with roses from our garden and bunting made from paintings

Charlie and Sadie made a sailing ships from bark and fabric scraps as presents for Oscar.

For Fathers Day

Fathers Day this Sunday!

I think most dads would love something handmade. 

This is fun and easy.

Use stickers, colored paper, sequins, pictures cut from magazines and colored pens to decorate a novelty cardboard tie.  

Ian certainly doesn't wear ties ~ but I think this will put a smile on his face.

We will make him wear it Sunday when we go out for coffee.

Sadie had great fun being a 'stereo type dad'.

 

Party preparations

We are hoping the weather will improve for Sadie's 'Fairy Blossom Tea Party' this weekend.

Sadie drew her invite list.  Each face represents a friend.  The two faces with glasses is Grandma and Granddad and the little face is Oscar. 

She got a bit upset when she accidentally drew eyelashes on her friend Finn ~ until I pointed out to her that boys DO have eyelashes, in fact her brothers have longer eyelashes than most girls!

Instead of party bags I've made each of her girl friends a play crown and for her boy friends a super hero mask to take home.

The cake is work in progress ~ I'm not much of a cake decorator, neither is the chef in the house!

It will be a great day ~ will share soon. xx

 

Having a go

I've don't posses a sporting bone in my body.....at school I use to dread sports day and my memories of cross-country running was......last.

Ian comes from a sporty family.  He was always encouraged to play a sport and was very good at rugby and tennis. 

Charlie has proved to be a child who likes to give anything a go, so it's been great to see him trying a variety of activities.....always with a smile on his face.

He enjoyed cross country running where he came 7th.....

and football has been a wonderful challenge for him.  

Strangely enough I'm one of those mama's who yell on the sideline (only shouts of encouragement of course!)

and little Oscar is never too far behind wanting to join in. xx

A beautiful day

Sunday, my favorite day of the week, purely because it's our one complete day off as a family.  We woke to hot air balloons flying over the house, the children excited as they could hear the 'whoosh' of flames.  Little people in their PJ's jumping up and down, waving and calling out ~ gorgeous.

Late morning we drove out to the Tora Coast.  The scenery was stunning as usual. Autumn is fabulous in the Wairarapa, it's still warm and there's an incredible light about, almost glowing and we're not even in autumns full glory yet.

It was low tide, perfect for exploring the rock pools.  Oscar had a wonderful time.  He held his first crab and starfish.  He was incredibly gentle.

 

Daddy then made Sadie a necklace and bracelet from seaweed so she could be a mermaid.  She asked me to take photographs of her on the rocks.  She's so theatrical sometimes.  

 

 

Afterwards Charlie started a game where he pretended to look for dinosaur bones in the rocky cliff face....to his surprise he started uncovering real fossils.  He was very excited.

Wild blackberries

We revisited the farm today.  The children have fond memories of our summer there and we want to keep those memories fresh in their minds.  Charlie mentioned his walks down the long drive to check the letter box and Sadie pointed out the beautiful hills and valley.  

Down at the old milking shed the wild blackberries were in fruit.  We've had very little rain so the berries were big, fat, juicy and sweet.

 

Oscar's first taste of blackberries was heavenly.

Tonight we had a beautiful pear and blackberry crumble, thanks to Daddy.

 

Woodland pixie tunics

With an active wee toddler on my hands now I've developed the pixie hats further into tunics.  They seem to be working well.  I wanted them long so when Oscar sits on the damp grass or twigs he stays a bit dryer and it's a bit more comfy for him.  The hood is great to keep the wind off his head, but is easily slipped off when it's not needed.

 

Woodland Rabbit

They are all made from recycled pure wool jumpers and lined with re-purposed fabrics and then finished off with a hand sewn felt motif.     Hopefully once I've refined the pattern a bit more I will have some for sale on Felt and Etsy's shops in the near future. 

 

Dragonfly

 

Charlie had a great 2nd day at school today.  Thank-you for all your kind thoughts.  It was also Daddy's birthday yesterday.   With all the excitment over school Daddy got slightly neglected.  So after school we went 'scrumping' (my new favorite word)  and bought him back a basket of goodies of ripe plums, pears and field mushrooms.

 

Sadie also picked Daddy some wild flowers and Charlie found him a snail shell.  

They were very much loved.

1 year old

Our little man turned 1 year old today.  Such a happy day!

I got up early to make him a birthday cake before I went to work.   I left the cake on the kitchen table under a cloth to cool and the plan was to have the cake when I got home at mid day.  I was at work for about half an hour and Ian phones.   A little Sadie mouse had found the it and nibbled her way round the edge of the cake!  So Daddy and Charlie made another one and when I got home we iced it for Oscar, decorated it with hundreds and thousands and fresh strawberries.  Little Sadie mouse a big slice too!

For Oscar's present we bought him a wooden wagon from our Toy Maker.  It's fantastic and all the kids are having great fun with it.  The crate part lifts off so you can use it as a cart as well.  I envision all sorts of things being piled up inside and carted around the house.
