Spring flower sun catcher

We've been making these gorgeous sun catchers this week from spring flowers and leaves collected from the garden.  As the sun hits the petals and leaves they look beautiful and translucent.   You'll find you can't stop at one, so they make nice little gifts.

 

Spring flowers and new soft leaves work best.  Blossom, pansy and daisies work well along with herbs such as Italian parsley and mint.  Anything you find in garden, even weeds can look pretty.  Part of the fun is in the hunting and collecting.

 

Carefully pull the leaves off the branch and collect them into a bowl.  Do the same with the petals but take time to inspect the flowers and how they are made up of different parts, shapes and colours.  It's quite fascinating.

 

 

Cut two pieces of sticky contact and place the leaves and petals onto the first piece.  Place the second piece of contact on top ~ it's like making a sandwich.

 

Use a piece of firm cardboard to cut a frame and staple the 'sandwich' in behind the frame.  Use a hole punch  and string it up with a piece of wool or string.

Horse riding

For Sadie's birthday present we took the children horse riding for the very first time.  

I was hoping Sadie's expectations weren't too high when she announced that 'I hope the horse grows wings and flies around with me'.  I think she has been reading this book a bit too much!

They rode a miniature horse called 'Pumpkin'.  The owner led Sadie and Pumpkin around a lovely piece of farmland.   At first Sadie was a little nervous but after I told her to relax and go with the rhythm of the horse and she did a great job.  She did have a fall at one point after Pumpkin got a little fright from a rowdy 'nearly two year old', but got herself up and got back into the saddle.  I felt so proud of her.

When it was Charlie's turn I could hear Sadie say to him 'just relax Charlie and enjoy yourself.  They make me smile.

The owner of Waiohine Gorge Horse Trekking is very accommodating and friendly.  She offers a variety of affordable packages for all ages and experience.  The property is a beautiful piece of Wairarapa countryside embraced by the Waiohine River.

We highly reccomend this for a great family adventure.

Fairy wings

I have been sewing madly for this weekends New Rags Market.  

This month I have a few new things to offer.

I've enjoyed sewing up some beautiful fairy wings made from vintage, retro and recycled fabrics.  

Sadie had fun test driving a few out for me.   She has given them the thumbs up.

Fairy blossom tea party

Thank-you everybody for the birthday wishes.....I think they all came true for our little Sadie turning four.

The sun was shining, the fairy wings were out in full force, the blossom was blooming, the pink milk flowed and she had a magical day with her friends.

Party preparations

We are hoping the weather will improve for Sadie's 'Fairy Blossom Tea Party' this weekend.

Sadie drew her invite list.  Each face represents a friend.  The two faces with glasses is Grandma and Granddad and the little face is Oscar. 

She got a bit upset when she accidentally drew eyelashes on her friend Finn ~ until I pointed out to her that boys DO have eyelashes, in fact her brothers have longer eyelashes than most girls!

Instead of party bags I've made each of her girl friends a play crown and for her boy friends a super hero mask to take home.

The cake is work in progress ~ I'm not much of a cake decorator, neither is the chef in the house!

The pinspiration

 

I had plans to make mine from felt, but remembered had a bag of scrap leather I had collected from a local upholsterer.

 

The leather was lovely and soft, so it was easy to cut.

Would love to make one in red leather too.
